I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve never cleaned my oven. Ever. In 10 years. I don’t think I even know how to clean the oven.
I’m kind of a neat freak, and I like to have everything picked up, put away, and shiny, but for some reason, I never really cared about the inside of the oven. Maybe its because I don’t see it, or maybe its because I don’t cook. Maybe its a little of both.
Our oven isn’t gross. It doesn’t look like anything exploded in there, but it did have some residue and the window was a little dirty. I can see that part, so I decided to clean it by using an at-home oven cleaning recipe that I found on Pinterest!

Supplies to Clean the Oven
Here’s what you need to complete this project:
- 5 Tablespoons Baking Soda
- 4 Tablespoons White Vinegar
- 3 Drops Blue Dawn
- Kitchen Sponge (Possibly Something Scrubby)
- Paper Towels
How To Clean the Oven
You mix this concoction into a paste, rub it all over your oven, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then scrub down the oven.
I forgot to take before pics (sorry!) but here’s what my paste looked like:
As you can see, my “paste” was pretty thin. In fact, it was watery. It did dry into a paste, but that was after I left it for a few minutes.
I used a kitchen sponge to apply this to my oven. As I was applying it, I could see it removing some of the grime, especially from the window.
After 15 minutes, I started scrubbing with my sponge. A little bit of pressure worked to remove some of the tougher spots, but there were some spots that weren’t going to come up without something tougher than a kitchen sponge.
I wiped it down with a wet sponge, and dried it with a paper towel.

Not bad for not much scrubbing. You probably need something stronger/grittier for really nasty ovens, but this works. It’s not perfect, but it will do in a pinch, and its pretty cheap! I had everything needed to do it on hand in my pantry. The best part, it’s all-natural and there’s no nasty fumes!
I placed two pieces of foil along the bottom to catch spills so that I don’t have to do this for another 10 years. Kidding. Sidenote: if you have an oven with a blue interior, do not line it with foil. Also, don’t use oven cleaner in a can on that oven.
