I don’t know about you, but I’ve been purging, cleaning and organizing everything like crazy. Pantry Organization seems to be one of the most popular quarantine hobbies. One of the biggest questions I’ve gotten since I showed you how I built my Farmhouse Pantry is how do I organize it. So, today I’m going to show you how I organize everything in my walk-in farmhouse pantry with Our Farmhouse Pantry Organization Reveal.
If you’re interested in the entire Kitchen & Pantry Remodel story, check out the DIY Ikea Kitchen Reveal post! And if organization is your thing, don’t miss my Laundry Room Organization post!
My goal for this pantry was for it to be functional and pretty. I built a large, walk-in pantry because I like to have everything we use daily at arm’s reach, plus a small backup stockpile so that I don’t have to shop as often. I also like to time that with when the items are at their cheapest price in order to save money. This allows me to “shop” from my pantry.
With that in mind, I designed the pantry to have certain zones to store my stockpile. I wanted a place where I could keep decanted items that we reach for daily or often. This includes things like cereal, baking supplies and snacks. I also wanted a place for canned goods and other heavy items. We needed an area to store chip bags and bars. Finally, we needed stockpile space for our backups.
Containers
The containers you choose for your pantry organization project are super important to getting an organized space that you will stick with for the long haul. I did a ton of detailed research on all of the container options before building the pantry. Choosing the containers before I built the pantry let me build the shelves to perfectly fit those specific containers. I also reused some containers that I had from the pantry at our old house. If you’re organizing an already existing pantry, make sure that you measure the depth of all of the shelves before purchasing containers.
For my pantry organization, I like clear containers so that I can see what I have and how much of it I have. Some people like to use baskets or bins to make it more uniform or decorative. It is completely up to you what you decide to do. I have used baskets for pantry organization in the past, but I found that I didn’t use what was in them. I also couldn’t quickly see what I needed to buy because it was hiding inside the basket. So for me, clear is the way to go.
The pantry organization containers I chose include a combination of OXO Pop Containers, World Market Glass Jars, iDesign Linus clear pantry bins, The Home Edit risers & bins, a Target turntable, and elfa cabinet drawers. These containers are all pretty uniform looking, which makes the pantry look cohesive.
Each of these bins serves a different purpose in a different zone. I also like them for different reasons which I will share in this post.
High Traffic Zone
The first two shelves above the countertop is our “high-traffic zone”. These shelves contain the things that we reach for over and over again each day. I made this shelf 14″ tall to fit the large glass jars from World Market that hold granola bars, popcorn packages, and candy. The tallest OXO pop containers that I use for pasta are on the left side. I also keep the best cereal containers here, some pantry bins with Carnation breakfast pouches and oatmeal, and the Goldfish because we keep them in the extra tall OXO bin.
The next shelf up is 10″ tall and keeps the rest of our daily items. These include snack crackers, almonds, cookies, croutons as well as some other cooking staples like rice & dry beans. I have an expandable canned good riser here for canned goods that I may only have one or two of that type of canned item. I try to arrange my cans on the risers in ROYGBIV just to be a little extra.
In the corner, I have a turntable from Target to hold all of our open jars of things like syrup, peanut butter and cookie butter. Turntables are the best if you have corners in your pantry. It helps things stay easily accessible. I love this one because it has rubber on it to grip the bottles.
The Middle Shelf
The 10″ middle shelf stores two kinds of things: baking supplies and soup. For the baking side, I have an OXO container for each type of item. Since the OXO containers are not as deep as the shelves, I have some extra space. If I have an extra of something or leftover that couldn’t quite fit in the container when I decanted it, I keep it behind that container. So there’s an open pound of sugar behind the sugar container, for example.
I have a mix of older OXO Pop containers that I’ve had for years, but I also purchased some of the newly redesigned OXO Pop canisters. The new containers have some features that the old ones didn’t have. My favorite new feature of the Pop containers is the little knob on the underside of the lid. You can use this button to keep OXO Pop scoops or even a Brown Sugar keeper.
Some of the ones I switched out to the new version are my Sugar, Flour, Pancake Mix, Brown Sugar, and Rice bins so that I could use the scoops, rice cup, and brown sugar keeper attachments. In this picture, you can see the scoop inside the sugar container. I think the older ones seal better, but the newer ones stack better because they are more modular.
To label my Pop Containers, I use a Sharpie Paint Pen. You could also use these cute labels if you don’t like your handwriting.
In the corner, I have one of my all-time-favorite containers, The Home Edit’s Deep Divided Bin, which stores all of my baking decorations. This is mostly sprinkles and color tube frosting. I use this bin in several different places in my house, including the medicine cabinet, under the kitchen sink and in my bathroom. It’s such a multi-tasker. When these go on sale, stock up!
Turning the corner from the baking supplies, I have soups, ramen, and packets. Lining up the soups by type is a simple way to keep them neat. I keep the ramen in an iDesign Pantry Bin since those noodles in a bag don’t stack well. I love the pantry containers better than the other iDesign containers because the sides do not taper. They are straight up and down. This way, you don’t have any dead space and you maximize every inch. The Home Edit bins also do not taper on the sides.
For packet items like salad dressing or taco seasoning, I use the iDesign packet organizing bin. Can you tell I love iDesign? They make wonderful products with lots of thought behind them. #notsponsored
The Stockpile Shelves
The two upper-most shelves contain my stockpile items and are 9″ tall each. These are the backups of everything below. Backups of my husband’s favorite cereal, Mac & Cheese that we buy at Sam’s Club, larger packets/sides in an iDesign pantry bin, pasta sauce, etc. I also have the packaged baking items like cake mixes, frosting, and muffin mixes to the left.
I keep condiments on the top shelf since that shelf is shorter with the 45 degree ceiling. There’s a drain pipe back that curves, hence the weird ceiling.
So that is how I organize the upper shelves of the massive walk in pantry.
The Bottom Shelves
The bottom shelves of the pantry were built like cabinets, so they can hold much heavier items. The corner cabinet is a weird shape and has a lot of hard to reach space in the corner, so I use this mostly for bulky and heavy overflow stockpile. This would include all kinds of drinks from juice pouches to Pediasure to sodas. The top corner shelf has larger backup cereal boxes as well as a couple of produce baskets to separate onions & potatoes. I have considered getting an large turntable like this one for this shelf, but I haven’t needed it yet.
The middle cabinet is for my stockpiled canned goods. These are the items that we have a lot of and go through constantly. The most popular ones are canned corn & green beans, cream of cooking soups, rotel, tomato sauce, and tuna. The bottom middle shelf has some marinade liquids and the stockpile of sugar & flour since those are heavy.
*Yes, those are mini wine bottles for spaghetti sauce and chili. No, my children don’t touch them. They don’t even realize that they are there.
The bottom right contains my Elfa drawers to hold our individually packaged snacks and chip bags. These get a ton of use, and I’m so happy we chose to install them! The elfa drawer dividers help us organize and keep double or triple the items in each drawer. These units come in several different sizes and can be easily installed in just minutes into any existing cabinet! I highly recommend them!
The Elfa Sale at The Container Store is the best time to buy the pantry glider drawers. You can save 30% off everything elfa during the sale that runs from late December into February every year – that’s right now! They also usually go on sale for 25% off in June with a Buy More, Save More sale, and again in the Fall.
The Countertop
I try not to keep too much on the countertop, because it is a really great workspace to pour our cereal or make snacks. It’s been so nice having this area because the containers rarely get abandoned on the island like they used to. Now, they get abandoned on the pantry countertop. Oh well. At least they are in the right room and easier to put away.
On the ikea chevron butcher block countertop, we keep our fruit bowl, a cookie jar, some cookbooks, a lamp that we leave on ALL THE TIME, a bread box and our toaster. I love having the toaster in here and not in the kitchen where I have to look at it all of the time.
I’m currently looking for some artwork for the walls, and I love the idea of this framed canvas piece from the new Threshold with Studio McGee line at Target, but it’s sold out right now. Wouldn’t that be super cute in here?
The Appliance Tower
We used one Ikea Sektion Tall Pantry Cabinet plus a 20″ Sektion wall cabinet to make up our Appliance Tower. We store all of the small appliances in this space. Seriously. All of them. The only small appliances in my kitchen are the coffee maker and the mixer which sit on the countertops. That’s it. There is nothing hiding in the drawers or cabinets. This is a great way to not waste money on appliances I won’t use. I only have space for the ones that we use.
I used to keep all of these things in lower cabinets in the old kitchen, but I would totally forget about them. Having them in this open shelf system lets me see what I have and remember to use it.
The biggest reason that I used an IKEA cabinet Instead of building this myself is that I wanted the shelves to be adjustable. I didn’t want to drill all of those holes and all of that. It was just easier to use the IKEA cabinet that I just had to assemble. Adjustability comes in handy when your appliances change. For example, we bought a Ninja Foodi Indoor Grill/Air Fryer for our anniversary, and I was able to rearrange the shelves to fit the new appliances in less than 5 minutes. See the difference?
The Hook Rack
I bought these budget-friendly farmhouse hooks to build a hook rack in the Laundry Room. You may have seen this hook rack I built on my Instagram. See how I built them and the simple trick to hide the screws in this blog post.
I had one hook left over that I used for aprons in here for a while. But since the room is 10′ tall and I am 5′ tall, I needed a step stool. The step stool needed to hang on the wall so it was out of the way. The hooks come with tiny screws that weren’t going to hold the ladder in the drywall. So I built a second hook rack for the pantry.
I’m going to show you in a separate post how I built this because it’s really super easy and cheap. Now I have space to hang aprons, my ladder, plus extra hooks for things like reusable grocery bags or whatever I want. I love how it looks against the herringbone Spoonflower Peel & Stick Wallpaper. Do I need some artwork above it? Maybe!
Saving on Containers
I don’t really have a total budget number on my pantry organization containers, because I’ve collected them over the years. Some I’ve had for almost 10 years! The older Pop Containers you can usually find at HomeGoods. Sometimes, the older ones go on sale at Target. I’ve also bought them at Bed Bath & Beyond with 20% off coupons, or when they go on sale at The Container Store. The elfa drawers are a great deal during the elfa Sale at Container Store, the best one being in January & February.
I love the large glass jars from World Market, and usually wait until there’s a Reward coupon. They are a really nice quality and perfect for bulk snacks. You can find The Home Edit items exclusively at The Container Store, and they’ve been on sale several times in the last 6 months. iDesign is available at The Container Store, Bed Bath & Beyond (slightly different versions), and Amazon.
I have a whole Cleaning & Organizing category of my favorite things in my Amazon Shop! Make sure you check that out and maybe find a new favorite of yours. I’ve got all kinds of my favorite finds in all different categories linked for you in there.
The Barn Door
I get asked a lot about the Barn Door. Barn doors are pretty easy to make, but by this point, I was tired of DIY and just wanted something ready made. I found this barn door from Build at a great price! The barn door kit, floor guide, and handle that matches our hardware I bought on Amazon.
Final Pantry Organization Thoughts
I’m super happy with the way this pantry organization project has turned out! I really, really love being able to store all of my items in one place with space to grow. Having the appliances visible in the pantry is a total game changer.
Your favorite item for the last 3 years are the elfa Pantry Drawers – and they are on sale right now for their best price ever! They really are game changers, and they can be easily installed in any cabinet or on any shelf. They come in different widths and heights for your needs & have dividers and labels! They install with just 4 small screws, and renters can install with command strips!
I hope this pantry organization post helps you with a path to organizing your own pantry. During this time of National Emergency, it has been such a relief to me to be able to control something by organizing my home. It’s taken some of the stress and uncertainty away and given me back a bit of my sanity.

Kimbert Evans says
Hi, what is the length, width and height of this pantry? How wide is the counter top and shelves?
Stacy says
Hi Kimbert,
Did you check out any of the other linked pantry posts? I’ve got all of those details in those posts. The countertop is just off the shelf and the base cabinets are typical base cabinet depth.
Hope that helps!

This is beautiful and has become our inspo pic for our pantry. Do you have a post that includes the dimensions for all the shelving? I love that you included advice/links to the storage you use for guidance.
Stacy says
Hi Adrianne,
Thank you! I have a couple of posts about building the pantry with some dimensions. The first is the Pantry Build Blog Post, and the other is the Top 7 Pantry Questions Answered Blog Post.
For the shelves, I measured the containers that I wanted to use first, and used that measurement to build my shelves with a little buffer room.
Hope that helps!

Nice job! Gave me the inspiration I’ve been looking for to completely redo my walk-in pantry. I’ll probably have more organizer questions later (LOL), but for now I wanted to know where you got those produce baskets. Do they have lids? I can’t quite tell from the picture. Thx so much!
Stacy says
Thanks Scott! They are from IKEA, but I found similar ones here on Amazon (affiliate link) https://amzn.to/3jQOgzi
They do not have lids.

My pantry is huge and incorporates the laundry area as well. It has the basic ugly builder grade metal shelving with all those openings for stuff to fall thru. I wanted to make it one cohesive room and use a barn door as well. Your beautiful room gave me so many ideas and will add tons more shelves and color to my space.
THANK YOU!!

Love your pantry! Thank you for the ideas. I really want a walk in pantry, mostly for the small appliances! I would even put the coffee maker and microwave in there. I think the only thing I would change is a swing door instead of barn door, you might have your hands full when taking things to kitchen!
Stacy says
Thank you so much Caelan! The design is very versatile for each individual’s needs. Just take the parts you like!
I never actually close the barn door. It’s mostly there for decoration. 🙂

I’ve been on the fence about the finish of my pantry shelves – paint vs. melamine – simply because of wear. After heavy use, how has your painted surface fared against the scrapes/bumps of normal use?
Stacy says
Hi Kate,
Thanks for your question! The shelves have held up beautifully. The Benjamin Moore Advance paint is really durable, provided that you let it cure the full 30 days. Scratches are easily cleaned up with a little Bar Keepers Friend. If not, its easy to repair with a paint brush.
Hope that helps!

Just the inspiration I was looking for! We’re starting to build our house & deciding cabinets. Your pantry is what I was imagining in my head but couldn’t convey! Our pantry is a little longer so we are thinking a tall cabinet for brooms, stools etc. Is there anything you would change/add?
Stacy says
Hi Kaylee,
Congratulations on building your home! I love the idea of a broom cabinet in the pantry. I actually put one in my laundry room, and my favorite thing about it is the outlet in the cabinet. I mounted my Dyson rack inside, and it charges with the door closed. It’s the little things. You can see how we did that here: https://www.stacyssavings.com/laundry-room-remodel-reveal/
Good luck with your build!

Hey Stacy, I love, love, love your pantry design! I’m doing something similar with my pantry and came across your blog while looking for ideas. Would you mind sharing some dimensions? Mainly I am wondering how deep your countertop is, how far it extends over the cabinets underneath, and how far the cabinets extend over the toekick. I looked for it on your other post about the pantry and couldn’t find exactly what you used. Thanks~

Hi There!
I am using your pantry as inspiration for my pantry. It is going to be a mini version since my space is smaller. I love everything about it! Ours has been built out and is ready for paint then my fun begins with shopping for all things to fill it and organize it! I am wondering and I may have missed it, but did you line your shelves with anything?
Stacy says
Hi Susan,
Shopping for all the things is so fun! I did not line my shelves. I was going to line them with white contact paper, but I couldn’t get it to lay straight. The paint that I used, Benjamin Moore Advance, is super easy to clean and rock hard if you let it cure for the full 30 days, which I did. It was really hard to wait, but it’s been worth it. They clean easily with a wet rag and a little dish soap.
Good luck with your project!

Holly says
Beautiful pantry! What are the shelf spacing heights in the lower cabinets? On one side you have the 2 shelf openings and 3 on the other. Would love to know their dimensions. Thanks!
Stacy says
Hi Holly,
I built those 3 shelf openings specific for the Elfa drawers that I installed in them. So they are roughly 17.5″ wide, and then the bottom two are 9.5-10″ and the top one is about 5.5″ tall. The 2 shelf openings, I just installed the shelf in the middle so that the openings were the same size.
The beauty of custom shelving is you can do whatever YOU need and want!
Hope that helps & thanks for checking out the blog!

How deep are your counters? This is so beautiful and has inspired my kitchen remodel. Unfortunately I can only fit a 3’ x 5’ pantry in my space.

I love everything about this! I’m in the process of designing our walk in pantry and it’s a little overwhelming. I’m curious, how did you combine the Ikea Sektion Tall Pantry Cabinet with the 20″ wall cabinet to create the appliance tower?

We have 10’ ceilings, so the 20” cabinet is on top of the tall pantry cabinet.
Thanks for you question & good luck with your project!

You have inspired me to redo our pantry which is very similar to yours. This is exactly what I have been wanting.
We just purchased the counter from Ikea and ordered our shelves which will take a month. My main question is regarding the counter. How easy was it to cut and did you have to do anything special to keep it from splitting?
Stacy says
Hi Jennifer!
The counter is super easy to cut. It’s particle board with a laminate top. We just put painter’s tape over where our cut line was, and used our circular saw to cut it across. No splinters when using Painter’s tape.
Good luck with your project & thanks for checking out the blog!

You should check out the instant pot air frying lid! It is amazing and is one less kitchen gadget. Beautiful pantry – almost the exact same dimensions as ours. Do you find that things get lost on the upper shelves? I’m a shorty, so I would be a little worried about this.
Stacy says
Hi Heather!
I’ll have to check that out! I did just get a Ninja Foodie Grill, which has an Air Fryer.
No, things don’t get lost on the upper shelves because I only use the upper shelves for backstock stockpile. I also keep things pulled to the front like a store instead of pushed back along the wall.
Hope that helps & thanks for checking out the blog!

Heidi D Dugger says
Thank you so much for this idea for the pantry. Honestly, it’s the best use of space I’ve ever seen and such a beautiful pantry. Though our space is not exactly the same we have followed your idea as closely as possible. The Ikea cabinet was perfect for all my essentials. With a 9 ft ceiling we have one less shelf than yours but with a bit more room width, we were able to have two sections of drawers like yours (container store). Instead of the Ikea counter, my husband found a beautiful piece of slightly damaged solid cherry butcher block counter from a salavage store ($112)nand has made the counter from that. All we have done is a satin poly to seal and it’s beautiful. My question is what type of lighting did you use. I have a smaller round nearly flush light but wondering about changing it to a square 14 inch flush mount LED. I couldn’t tell what you had and I want to be sure not to shadow the higher up shelves. Please advise.
Stacy says
Hi Heidi!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so happy that you found some inspiration from my pantry.
As far as the lighting, I just use a 6″ recessed can with an LED light module that we got from Lowes. We usually use around 2700 kelvin lights. We use these all over the house. We also have a small mini-lamp on the counter. We do get some shadows on the shelves, but I can still see what’s on them. You could get some of those remote control battery powered puck lights from Amazon. Some like this (affiliate link): https://amzn.to/2wX5KFf
If you have electrical, you could do LED strip lights.
Good luck with your decision and thanks for checking out the blog!
