My Konmari Chronicles: Halftime Report!

Organizing · April 24, 2017

It’s been a while since I documented a completed step of my process of using the Konmari Method of reducing clutter & getting organized throughout my house.  That’s because I haven’t finished Step 2: Paper.  I’ve started it.  I’ve also started Step 3: Komono (everything else).  I’m jumping around a bit, even though it says you’re not supposed to do that.  Oh well.

I wanted to drop in today because I wanted to give you my thoughts on the whole process now that I’m 4 months into it.

It’s awesome.

Yep.  It really is awesome.  So far, I’ve done my clothing, including my nightstands & bedroom, as well as the kitchen & the cleaning supplies (laundry room).  It’s fantastic & life-changing!

Here are the things I’ve noticed:

outfits

1. Its easier to get dressed.

Now that I’ve scaled down my clothing & shoes, it takes 5 minutes tops to pick out something to wear.  The new closet is amazing, and the folding system makes it super easy to find the shirt that I’m looking for.  The best part?  All of my clothing is inside the closet.  No more going to the bedroom for underwear.  Its a one-stop shop.  Do I still buy new stuff?  Of course.  But now, I only buy the things that I truly love, and I don’t really have trouble getting rid of things that I don’t love.  I’m also not dressing like a lazy slob anymore, as you can see on Instagram.

2.  My purse is clean.

This was one I told you about when I did Step 1.  The purse thing really works.  What is this purse thing?  When I get home for the day, I empty my purse and put each item in a special, reserved spot on a shelf or in a drawer of my closet.  I also put the receipts I need on my desk and throw the trash away.  Then, when I’m ready to leave the next day, I only put the things that I need for that trip in my purse.  It takes less than 5 minutes to do, and its made a HUGE difference.  I never leave without my daughter’s medication.  I never leave the house without extra diapers or wipes.  I don’t have kid snacks petrifying in the bottom of my purse.  It’s glorious!

3.  Cleaning the kitchen is a breeze!

We all know that cleaning the kitchen sucks, but it makes a HUGE difference in the feel of your house.  A clean kitchen makes the rest of the house feel clean even when it might not be.  I haven’t detailed this step yet, but I donated one enormous box of stuff plus 4 trash bags full, all from my kitchen.  I have empty cabinets, y’all!  It really is amazing.  Everything has a spot, so it makes it easy to put away.  I make sure to put things away when I’m done using them.  It actually takes extra time to leave stuff out and put it away later.  Then, all I have to do is wipe down the counters (which is so much easier to do with pretty new cleaning products) and its done!

I can’t wait to see how this one change comes into play while designing our future kitchen remodel.  I’ve got big plans for this space, and now that I don’t have so much stuff, I have more flexibility in what we can do…eventually.

4.  No more lost remotes!

My bedside table was a disaster.  I never even used the top drawer, because it was so full of stuff.  I had some divided boxes in there from The Container Store, but I wasn’t using them effectively.  Once I emptied everything out of this dresser that I use as a nightstand, I was able to fill a trash bag full of stuff.  I only put back what I love and use, and it was so much easier to organize.  The second drawer is a baby supplies drawer, and the third has baby pjs and blankets.  IT’S NOT EVEN MY STUFF!

5.  I actually WANT to do laundry!

Ok, that was a joke.  But seriously, I don’t mind being in the laundry room as much anymore.  Before, I felt suffocated by the tiny cabinets overflowing with bottles and the unorganized drawer.  Now, its so much easier to find that box of Kleenex or duster or cleaning product!

The whole process is taking a long time, mostly because I have three kids and not much time to do it, but I’m loving the results!  There’s only one step that I’m really scared of, and that’s all of that crap in the garage.  That’s going to take me forever.  Yikes!

I’ve always done my nails at home to save money, but I wanted something that actually lasted without damaging my nails.

The Dazzle Dry system dries in about 5 minutes, wears like gel (without the damage), and I can go over a week without chipping.

I’m using You’re Unforgettable from their Better Together spring collection, and I linked the full system + shades in my LTK so you can shop everything in one place.

I’ve shared parts of this room before — but not th I’ve shared parts of this room before — but not the full evolution.

This is my 16-year-old son’s bedroom. I designed it back in the 2020 One Room Challenge with the goal of creating something we wouldn’t need to redo every few years.

Before that, it was a bright little boy’s room.
And when we first got the keys? Just a blank box.

Over time, we’ve upgraded it slowly — including replacing the carpet with hardwood last year to match the rest of the house.

The foundation hasn’t changed.
Just the seasons.

More books.
More Legos.
More personality.

Same room. Just evolving.

I’ll be sharing more spaces from our renovation — not in order, just as they come. Follow along for more. 🤍

Adding an art lamp was the final touch. It completely changed how this space feels, especially at night. ✨
