How To Make A Cake Bunting Decoration – A Pinterest Project!

Here’s another birthday party Pinterest Project post!  Since I made the birthday cake and the smash cake fairly plain looking, I wanted to put some sort of fun decoration on the top.  So today, I’m going to show you how I made this fun cake bunting decoration!

I knew I didn’t want fancy frosting, and I wanted a more sleek, clean look for the birthday cake.  I found a pin of a cake with flag buntings on the top, and I thought that it looked easy enough.

I decided to use some of the fabric that I had from party decor to use for the flags on my bunting to help it tie into the other decor that I made.

Supplies

Here’s what you need to make your own cake bunting decoration:

• Fabric or Scrapbook Paper
• Lollipop Sticks
• Twine
• Scissors
• Fabric Glue or Glue Stick

How Much I Spent

My materials cost me less than $10, and I got them all at Hobby Lobby.  The lollipop sticks come in a bag of 24.  There are two different lengths.  They were $3.  The twine was in the macrome section of the store, and it was about $4 for 12 yards.  The fabric glue stick was in the sewing notions section for less than $2.  I used fabric scraps left over from another party decor project.  You don’t need much fabric (or scrapbook paper, whatever you’re using) for this project.

Tying the Twine

The first step is to tie your twine onto your lollipop sticks.  You want to have enough slack so that the bunting will curve slightly, but not so much that the weight of your flags will weigh it down so much that it touches the top of the cake. I was able to tie mine tight enough that I didn’t need to glue the knot to the stick, but you could put a little dot of glue there to help it stay up. I tied one side, and then held it up the way that I wanted to put it in the cake, visually figured out how much I needed, and then tied the other side.

Making the Flags

Now you’re ready to cut your flags.  To make this easy, I folded my fabric so that my cuts would make fabric diamonds.  Based on the length of your twine, you need to figure out how many flags you want.  I think they look better visually with odd numbers of flags, so I had 5 on the larger cake’s bunting and 3 on the smash cake.  Again, I eyeballed it, but I tried to make the flags the same size at the top.

I cut the first flag diamond, and then I placed that over the fabric fold to cut the next one, so that they were all the same size.

Gluing your flags is the next step.  Place a little glue on both sides of the inside of your flag, and then place the flag over the twine and press your two sides together so that none of the inside shows.

And here’s the finished project!

The Finished Product

This bunting was super easy and took me all of about 10 minutes to complete.  I let them dry overnight.  Everyone loved them, and they made my otherwise plain cakes a part of the party!

So what do you think?  These were so easy!  You could do multiple strands on the lollipop sticks for a more layered look, or you could do smaller flags that were more square when flat, or even little tag pennants or tie on ribbons!  The possibilities are endless!
