I was thinking about what to write about on Valentine’s Day, and a discussion that I had with Doug last night gave me an idea. So, I’m going to tell you all about why I love Hexagons, and how I incorporate that love into my home.
But we have to start at the beginning.
Many, many years ago, when I was in High School, I was a receptionist at my hair salon. It was one of my very first jobs. Every day on the way to work, I would drive past a cake shop that had a beautiful display of wedding cakes in the window. One particular wedding cake caught my eye: a tiered hexagon cake. I just thought it was so unique. Who has a Hexagon-Shaped cake?
Forgive me for the photo quality, we got married before digital images were a thing.
I knew that someday when I got married, I would have that hexagon cake. Years later, when Doug asked me to marry him, we went to that cake shop for our cake testing & placed an order for our Tiered Hexagon Cake.
It was the most delicious cake I’ve ever tasted. This gorgeous cake was 5 tiers, white cake with Chambord-flavored Italian Creme and Fresh Sliced Strawberries in between the layers. It was so good, I ordered a small, 10″ version of it for our 10th anniversary.
When we bought this house, we knew it was a total fixer-upper and that we’d have to remodel the whole thing. The Master Bathroom was on the top of the list because of leaks in the shower. While at Floor & Decor looking at tile, I came across a sheet of 1″ hexagon carrera marble tile, and that was it. I was in love. Carrera & Hexagons? I had to have it.
I decided I would try to implement hexagons tastefully in the more permanent decor choices in our forever home. Sort of our stamp. A calling card.
We used the Hex Tile in the back of the shower niches in our Master Bathroom.
The next time I used it, was on the floor of the kid’s Jack & Jill Bathroom.
I have bought a few things here and there for our home that incorporate hexagons. I have these cute Target shelves on my “no spend month” project list to get stained and hung in the powder room.
The nesting tables in the girls’ room are hexagons. Which reminds me that I need to do an update on this now-shared space.
But it’s been a while since we’ve had to make any permanent design choices here. That’s about to change.
You heard it here first, but we’ve decided to go ahead and move forward with the guest bathroom remodel in 2018! That means, there will be NO MORE UGLY BATHROOMS in this house! Can I get an AMEN! This is a story for an entire blog post, which is coming, but we’ve already gotten started. That’s why I’ve not been on Instagram as much lately. I’ve been wearing crappy clothes and covered in drywall mud & dust.
I’ve been trying to narrow down my choices for the back bathroom, and once again, I’ve come back to my favorite hex tiles. They will go on the floor and in the back of the shower niche.
Because we’re using the same hex tile on the floor in the back bathroom, I think that means it has been solidified as a choice for the future kitchen & laundry room remodels. I’m thinking kitchen backsplash (which will go to the ceiling behind a vent hood) and laundry room floor. These three rooms are so close to each other, that they need to coordinate as much as possible.
So a wedding cake that I saw in a window when I was in High School started my love affair with hexagons. That love has turned into our unique and meaningful stamp on this house.
The best part about this story? Doug didn’t even realize my hexagon love was a thing or that it had any meaning whatsoever. So I guess that’s my little secret, that you guys now know too. 😉
I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite hexagon-items just in case you want to get on the hex-bandwagon too.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
