It’s Week 5 of the One Room Challenge, and we’re in the home stretch of our Tween Boy Room Makeover! Next week is the reveal, but we’ve got so much left to do! This week, we’re adding some DIY wall decor, including Lego Minifig Displays & a Giant Pegboard to jazz up the left wall.

The Blank Wall
For Week 5, we’re going to concentrate on the blank wall above the bed. The plan here is to add some Wall Decor that is also useful storage at the same time. First, we’re going to make two more Lego Minifig Display Frames. Second, we need some pegboard display space, but we’re going to Supersize it & make it special.
Minifig Frames
When my son started getting into Legos, I found this tutorial on Pinterest for how to make minifig display frames. So I made two to hang above his bed. I always wanted to make more, so I bought 2 IKEA Ribba (now called Sannahed) Shadowbox Frames for $14.99/ea a few months ago to do just that.
The new Sannahed Frames are slightly different sized, so your measurements may be different for the following steps.
This project cheap, but it takes some time & a lot of patience. You need a shadow box frame, mat board, 2×4 Lego bricks in your color choice (our frames needed 56 each), and super glue. One mat board gave me mats for both frames.
I measured my spacing & made level pencil marks where my Legos needed to be. My spacing is 1″ from the 2 sides and bottom, and then around 1 1/16″/ea between each Lego Left to Right, and then 2 5/8″ spacing between the rows. Your spacing will be different. The last step is to superglue the Legos to the pencil marks and put the frame back together without the glass.
I hung the frames with nails & picture hangers. I also secured the bottom corners to the wall with Command Velcro strips. This is step is super important. When your kid adds & moves minifigs, these frames move and pop off your nail. The Command Velcro keeps them in place.
He decided to theme them: Star Wars, Disney, Harry Potter, and then all other themes.
The Giant Pegboard
In his old room, my son loved to hang posters behind his door with painter’s tape. This gave me the idea to create a giant pegboard, 24′ square, that would fit everything he wanted to hang up. I found these peel & stick cork tiles on Amazon, and purchased 4 6 packs. These are 1/2″ thick so that the pins don’t go through to the wall. They also come with a pack of push pins.
Instead of just slapping the cork tiles to the wall and calling it a day, I decided to frame them using 2 pieces of 1×4 MDF and some paint. I had leftover trim paint from the kid’s bathroom that is the same color as the Navy Blue Lego Wall, which was perfect!
I laid out 4 tiles and measured to get the right measurement for my frame boards. Some of the tiles were a bit bigger than 1 square foot, so make sure you measure before you cut your frame. 2 12′ pieces of MDF gave me one side and one horizontal side of the frame from each. I easily attached the frame to the wall with my nailgun, making sure they were level & square. The last steps were to fill the nail holes with wood filler, sand the patches, caulk and paint with 2 coats of Benjamin Moore Advance in Hale Navy.
Once the frame was dry, I used a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive side of the tile before placing them on the wall. These say they aren’t supposed to be used for textured walls, which we have. I have noticed one of the tiles that isn’t sticking to the wall. However, they are tight in the giant pegboard frame, so it’s not falling out. I did end up using my brad nailer to nail the corners to the wall.
Sidenote, I did use an electrical outlet extender to safely bring the outlet a little further out.
My son LOVES this giant pegboard display space! I love that it is defined and not crazy. He wants to add some Christmas Lights to it when the One Room Challenge is over.

We finally have a deal! I swear, this room got expensive with all of that wood. The budget stands at about $1,162 so far.
