Laundry Room Organization – See How I Store Everything!

Now that the Laundry Room Remodel is complete, it’s time to get some laundry room organization in place!

I knew with all of these cabinets that laundry room organization was going to be important.  This room serves 3 functions: utility/cleaning storage, laundry, and pool toys/towels.  Each of those things needed to have a defined space and not be mixed together.

I completed this Laundry Room Organization project earlier in our quarantine, and I used mostly things I already had on hand. However, I did order a few things from Amazon to finish it up.

Getting this space all organized was a huge help while we’ve been home all day every day.  We’ve been cleaning a lot, and everyone knows where to find everything.  That’s the whole point, right?  Putting it away is another story.

So let’s check out how I organized everything!

Laundry Room Organization – Under the Sink

We don’t have any drawers in this laundry room.  So, I needed the space under the sink to keep things that we reach for a lot, but I didn’t want to mix up with other “categories”.  This cabinet is where we keep our junk towels.  I used this basket that we had in our old pantry to contain the mis-matched towels.  We also have some bird seed in a bin because this is right next to the patio door.  Keeping it here also keeps critters out of the bird seed.  I love the bin that I bought for this seed because its square and the lid is flat.  This allows me to stack things nicely on top.  I also bought this scoop to keep inside.

I have a plastic container that I use when I drain my washing machine here.  We also keep an old wipes container with plastic grocery sacks in it, a flashlight, and our old Dyson handheld vac.  On the right is our Spin Mop Bucket and the salt gun to take care of flies outside on the in the Summer.

I did my new-favorite trick – laying peel & stick tiles – in the bottom of this cabinet to protect it from moisture and leaks. I love the way it looks when I open the cabinet doors!

Laundry Room Organization – Tall Storage

I have a lot of favorite parts of the laundry room, but this tall storage utility cabinet was something I’ve been dreaming about since we bought this house.  This cabinet was an absolute must have.

We had our electrician run an outlet to the inside of this cabinet because I knew someday I wanted a cordless stick vacuum.  Little did I know that our old Dyson was going to crap out in February.  So this outlet is already getting put to use with our new vacuum!  The only item that is screwed into the cabinet is the Dyson charging station.  Everything else is Command products.

I love these Command Mop & Broom holders.  They are easy to install, can be used one-handed, and they don’t damage your cabinets.  The rubbery grip holds the handles tight so that your tools don’t move around at all.  Plus, you can use them for anything with a handle, not just brooms & mops.  I have 3 of these in this cabinet for mops and brooms.  I really want to get one of these handled tub & tile cleaners, so I’ll definitely install another of these in this cabinet.

For the duster, brush & dust pan I used regular sized Command hooks that I already had in my stash.  Since the back of the cabinet is thin particle board, I knew using the solid wood door was a better choice.  Plus, these get daily use, and it is easier to not have to reach to the back for these items.  Door storage for the win!

We keep a drying rack in here, and someday, I want to get another of these step-stools that we use in the pantry & kitchen.  The bottom of this cabinet was getting a little beat up with the in and out of the cleaning tools, so I used 3 of my peel & stick tiles left over from the sink cabinets to protect it.

Laundry Room Organization – Cleaning & Household Supplies

Above the utility cabinet is where we keep our daily cleaning supplies.  I like that this cabinet keeps them high and out of reach for our smaller child, but our oldest can reach it when he does his chores.  The cleaning caddy is one we’ve had forever, and it has one of everything we need to do the daily cleaning routine ready to go.  I keep 2 small hand dusters here because I have two little “helpers” who love to “dust” while I’m doing the chores.  Do you have any of those?

Next to that, I have 2 acrylic drawers where I keep my blue microfiber cleaning cloths and an extra dust mop scrubber head.  Behind that, I have some old cloth diapers that we use now as heavy duty cleaning rags, and some pop containers with Borax & Powdered Tide that I use for cleaning.

On the shelf above the cleaning supplies, we have our Household Item storage.  I love these clear shoe boxes and use them all over the house.  I used to use them for shoes in our old house, but now I use them for everything but my shoes.

In the laundry room I’ve got 6 clear shoe boxes all labeled with what’s inside.  I’ve got a box for duster heads, vacuum accessories, steam mop accessories, random cleaning tools, and my command/felt pad stash.  I also keep some of the bulkier steam mop hoses and attachments in this cabinet.

I labeled everything with the label maker I’ve been using for the past few years. It’s my favorite label maker ever, and you can buy different tapes to make whatever colors you want. I chose to use the clear/gold tape for in here just to make it a little extra.

Our battery organizer might be my favorite thing in this cabinet. It has space for all the batteries, and keeps them all contained and safe so that they don’t start a fire. Plus, it has a flat lid and its clear! Love love love! They also make a smaller version if you’re not a battery hoarder like I am. In our defense, we go through a lot of AA batteries for video game controllers.

Finally, our distilled water for our steam mop lives here as well as extra charcoal bags.  Charcoal bags are awesome for removing odors, and these last for 2 years.  You just stick them in the sun for a couple hours once a month to recharge them.  I strategically hide these all over my house.

Laundry Room Organization – Steam Cleaner Storage

We have a small cabinet at the top of the tall unit, but it is not as deep as the cabinets below it.  We used IKEA Sektion Kitchen cabinets in our Laundry Room Remodel, and IKEA doesn’t sell a 20″ tall 24″ deep wall cabinet.  Even with the 14″ depth, this was the perfect spot for my Little Green Machine carpet cleaner.  I also keep my dryer vent cleaning tube in here as well as the cleaner solution for the Green Machine.  All the vacuum stuff lives in the tower!

Laundry Room Organization – Laundry Cabinets

The two 30″ cabinets above the laundry machines hold a hybrid of all 3 functions of this room: laundry, cleaning and pool.

Above the dryer, we have our pool towel stash.  We needed these as low as possible so that my son could reach them.  Our pool towels are all ancient.  I’m hoping to be able to get some new matching ones soon.

Above the pool towels, we have some more acrylic drawers with things like Magic Erasers, Scrub Sponges, and some Ivory soap that I’ve kept to do science experiments that I never got around to doing.  We have a turntable with some rarely-used but needed specialty cleaners.  Lastly, our stockpile of backup trigger cleaners lives in this cabinet.  Most of the cleaning supply backstock is in the upper upper cabinets, but these are slightly too tall for that space.  So the triggers live in this cabinet.

The cabinet over the washing machine keeps all of our laundry supplies, backup paper towels, and some toilet paper backstock. I prefer to use smaller bottles of detergent and softener, so I usually have a larger bottle that I decant into a smaller bottle. The little shelf basket has some sample-size laundry products. 

The caddy on the door holds my delicate washing bag, a stain brush, and some different stain removers. 

Laundry Room Organization – Cleaning Supply Backstock

I store just about all of our cleaning supply backstock in the upper upper cabinets, since these don’t need to be accessed all of the time.  I like to line my products up to look like a store.  It makes it easier for me to maintain an inventory and know what I need to replenish when its time to place my Grove Collaborative order.

Laundry Room Organization – Cabinet Over the Sink

The last cabinet in this laundry room is the cabinet over the sink.  This one is slightly empty, and I like it that way!  I’ve got some leftover space bags, Ziploc Storage bags, and an empty spray bottle.  I’ve also got a bin in here for my husband’s beer brewing cleaning supplies & accessories.

I still need to put the little covers on the cabinet brackets. Oops!

Laundry Room Organization – Countertop Items

The items on the countertop are all used regularly. We keep this old lamp on almost all of the time. I love the glow and warmth it adds to the space!

The giant glass jar contains OxiClean powder, because I put that stuff in almost every load of laundry that I do. It’s nice to have that easy to reach. I love these durable scoops to get the perfect amount.

The basket from HomeGoods is where we put the lost socks looking for mates. I keep my favorite candle on this cute little wooden trivet pedestal & it makes the room smell amazing!

By the sink I have a tray from Grove Collaborative with hand soap, a small bottle of blue Dawn, and a tiny dish for rings. I used an extra hook from my wall hook rack to keep a dish towel handy by the sink.

Laundry Room Decor

It’s important to me that our Laundry Room Decor be useful as well as pretty.  In fact, I try to do that in every room of my house.  For example, the open shelf above the sink has a jar with dryer balls in it.  The wood crate has spray bottles, empty jars, and a drying rack.

The octopus hook on the wall between the doors is supposed to hold the key to the pool fence.

The farmhouse hook rack that I built for about $35 is used for so many thing.  If you read the pantry organization post,  you’ll remember I did a smaller version in there.  For this one, I knew I wanted it to span this 9′ wall, so this is a 1x6x8 piece of pine.  I stained it Mixwax Dark Walnut, and used Semi-Gloss Polycrylic to seal it.  I used 9 of these Farmhouse Hooks from Amazon (they’re under $20!) installed evenly along the board.

We use this hook rack for all kinds of things from this basket you see here (we put goggles and pool toys in it), to our pool/beach bag, to hanging things to dry. I stopped into Hobby Lobby the other day, and they have a smaller 6 hook version for $80, so even on sale the one I made is a much better deal. Plus, its bigger!

I still need to find some art work to hang over the hook rack, but I haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for.

The rug runner really finishes the space! I love the contrast of the vintage looking rug to the crisp clean white laundry room.

I also recently bought a snake plant at IKEA and a put her in this pretty basket. We call her Narcissa. She loves this spot!
