Latest on the Craft Room – Guest Room Remodel

Our Guest Room/Craft Room Remodel is coming along! Let’s check out the latest guest room remodel progress.

***This room is really hard to photograph.  It’s very tight and has very tall, 10′ ceilings.  I tried 4 different lenses, and this was the best I could do.

Now that you’re all caught up, here’s where we’re at: this room is a basic functioning husband room/craft room for now.  Doug has been sleeping in here since the baby came home.  He’s got to work, so he needs his sleep.  That works for me, because I can get on my laptop and click buttons/search/do surveys to make money in the middle of the night.

Built In Progress

Since I last updated you, we got the DIY countertops installed.  We built these out of simple 2x10s that we cut to size and then screwed together using pocket holes and screws made by my Kreg Jig.  The only thing is I wish I had a table saw so that I could have ripped the curved edges down to square them so that they would make a solid surface.

Doug stained these in Minwax Jacobean for me, and I love how they turned out!  We already had the stain and Satin poly, so it only cost us about $20 for the wood to make these two countertops.

We finally got around to painting the cabinet doors with our Critter Paint Sprayer & installing them after the baby was born.  Getting them installed was tricky, and I keep having to adjust the balancing.  The cabinet knobs I found on a shopping trip to Anthropologie, and I liked how they bring in the navy.  They were only $8.

Furnishing Progress

About a month ago, I made this budget-friendly DIY upholstered headboard for the guest room remodel.  If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have seen updates as I was going through the process.  See how I made it for WAY less than paying for one in this blog post. There may or may not have been a keg involved.

I installed the new Bamboo Shade in the guest room window, and I love it!  I’m going to get these same shades in all of the windows on the back of the house, but this was the first one.  There is blackout lining on the back, so this room gets DARK.

The rest of the guest room/craft room decor is mostly no longer available. I bought two wall sconces for either side of the headboard, along with a duvet cover & shams at Pottery Barn.  I found the coverlet & shams at Home Goods a few months ago.  The yellow printed sheets are from Target.  I also picked up a sunburst mirror at World Market with my birthday coupon, and an embroidered accent pillow at Marshalls.

I need to iron the duvet cover so I can put that on the bed.  The pictures that I picked up at Homegoods are going somewhere in this room, but I want to find a mirror for over the dresser first.  I’m not sure what I want.  At some point, there will be a big gallery wall here with a small tv, but that can’t be done until I find the mirror.

The little green thing on the floor is the baby’s tummy time mat.

What’s Left To Do

I purchased most of the materials to make the built in shelving above the cabinets & around the window, so I’m hoping to get started on that project this week!

The Guest Room Remodel Numbers

Almost done!  Between the paint, cabinets, and other miscellaneous trips to Lowe’s, we’ve spent about $400.  The majority of that ($174) was the cabinets.  The headboard cost me about $80.    The rest includes the wood for the countertops and about $100 in organizational stuff from HomeGoods (I couldn’t resist).  The $400 number also includes some updates to the closet in this room which I’ll cover in another post.

I’ve spent about $300 so far on decor & organization stuff.  The duvet cover & lamps were about $159 out of pocket, because I had $200 in gift cards I’d been saving.  The pillow was $20, and the mirror was about $65 with my coupon.  I couldn’t wait for a sale.

A New Window & Hardwood floors are a long ways off, so this room will be considered done when I’ve built the built ins, installed the crown moulding, and unpacked my boxes.  I cannot wait to unpack the boxes!
